Waskahegan Trail Association - About Us

Association Activities - Waskahegan Trail Association

The Waskahegan Trail Association leads Sunday hikes several times each month. When there is sufficient snow, a portion of the hiking group will cross country ski or snowshoe as an alternative to the hike. An annual general meeting is held in the Spring and a social in the fall.
Volunteer work parties go out from May till October to maintain the trail. Members receive information on these activities through our newsletter. Announcements are also made in the local media.

All events are open to anyone interested in attending and agreeable to our Rules, FAQs and Etiquette and who sign our waivers. Please review our Sunday Hike Checklist prior to attending. The association recommends sturdy footwear for hikes, particularly hikes out of the city. Plan to bring a lunch, adquate fluids, snacks and dress for the conditions. Please note that participation in a hike is at the sole discretion of the Hike Leader.

Those participating in scheduled hikes are asked to sign a waiver of liability. Although nonmembers may use the trail, the Association would feel safer if hikers became Member, and shared their concerns about the development, care, and future of the trail.

Interested in other walking activities? Some Waskahegan members are also Meetup.com members; check out their mid-week walks and hikes here.

Meeting Places

Our Meeting Locations

We use central meeting locations for all of hikes.  The locations have been selected to be near public transit, have plenty of parking (and permission from the landowner to park there) and are secure.  Please plan to car pool as it saves gas, reduces our carbon foot print, allows individuals to get to know each other before and after the hike. As well, we often need to park on rural roads, the fewer the cars the less impact we have on our rural communities.

The following is a list of our current meeting locations.  You can either click on the map to the right or on the links below to get a detail description of each meeting location.  See you at the next hike!

  • Fort Edmonton parking lot: follow signs on Fox Drive)

  • Hawrelak Park: 93 Avenue & Groat Road

  • McDonalds Argyll: Argyll & 81 Street

  • McDonalds Capilano: 9857 50th Street

  • McDonalds Westmount: 318-111 Avenue & Groat Road

  • Snow Valley Ski Club: 13204-45 Ave, access via Whitemud Dr. off 122 St.

  • St. Albert Centre: St.Albert Trail & Bellerose Dr

  • Super Store Calgary Trail: 5019 Calgary Trail NW corner Bridge (access off Whitemud)

  • Super Store 170th and Stony Plain Road

  • Terwilleger Park: Rabbit Hill Road off Terwilleger

As well, please read the FAQs, Etiquette, Rules or download our Brochure - for additional information about our Trail.

Carpool Locations

Trips leave on the hour so please arrive 15 minutes early.

Our trips go into country areas, good foot wear, food, fluids and clothing is essential. A reasonable level of physical conditioning is required as the group moves along at a good pace. All events are open to anyone interested in attending and agreeable to our Rules, FAQs and Etiquette and who sign a waiver.
Cars will be pooled. Please give $5.00 gas money to the driver.

For summer'ish walks, more fluids, insect repellant and sun tan lotion. For Fall/Spring walks, rain gear. For winter trips we walk, ski or snowshoe.  The last two are dependent upon suitable and sufficient snow. You must supply your own equipment. No matter the season, always bring good boots, gaiters are recommended, lunch and snacks.  Return times vary depending upon the distance from the city, trail  conditions, etc.

Pets are not permitted on the Sunday Hikes as there are wild and domestic animal encounters along the trail.  Older childern are welcome but must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.  In considering whether to bring a child or a person with a disability, please consider the following:

  • Individuals wishing to hike do so at the sole discretion of the hike leader of that trip
  • For safety reasons, the group must stay together
  • We walk at a good pace - fast enough for a healthy person to hold a conversation
  • The terrain varies but can include things like climbing ladders (stiles) over barb-wire fences, narrow trails with roots and other obstructions such as dead fall
  • The distance from vehicles and the rural nature means that it is difficult to turn back once the hike commences
  • Often there are no washroom facilities; a separation break sees the ladies and gentlemen separate to attend to their respective needs
