General Safety and Etiquette on Waskahegan Trails

Please Read the FAQs and Rules - but this is good general infomration about our Trail.

    • The association and its members place a very high value on the generosity of the individual landowners that allow us to use their personal property and we will make every effort to ensure that the trust of the landowners is not abused.
    • Our agreement the landowners does not allow for the opening of any gates, or travel on any routes other than the marked trail.
    • Hiking the Waskahegan Trail can be hazardous. There are no special markers to flag the many potentially dangerous hazards.
    • Animals both domestic and wild may be encountered along the trail.
    • Most of the trail in remote from help and travelled infrequently. We recommend travel on this trail with at least one companion.
    • lf persons that travel on the Waskahegan Trail must accept total responsibility for their own individual safety and well being.
    • DO NOT travel on this trail if you do not want to accept this condition.
    • There are many scheduled group hikes with a leader during weekends that permit hikers to travel on the trail with additional security that comes with traveling with companions.

Sunday (Scheduled) Hikes - What to Expect

It is tough starting with a new group. Hopefully the following will give you some sense of the norms, behaviours and expectations we have of you and you should have of us.

    • Read our Waiver Policy on this Website and ensure that you understand and will be comfortable signing it.
    • See our Sunday Hike Check List; we recommend sturdy footwear, bring a lunch, adquate fluids, snacks and dress for the conditions.
    • Trips leave on the hour, so plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to sign in and meet your fellow hikers.
    • A reasonable level of physical conditioning is required as the group moves along at a good pace.
    • We car pool and the current standard charge can be found on the event description.
    • Return times vary depending upon the distance from the city, trail conditions, etc.
    • Pets are not permitted on the Sunday Hikes as there are wild and domestic animal encounters along the trail.
    • Older childern are welcome but must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. (See our FAQ page for more on this)

How do you go to the bathroom and other Details?

Once you are on the hike, there are somethings you should know...

    • We stay together as a group. The front person is the Hike Leader and the back person is the Tail Ender.
    • Plan to chat and get to know your fellow hiker.
    • If you need to stop, let the Hike Leader know and we'll wait.
    • Often there are no washroom facilities; a separation break sees the ladies and gentlemen separate to attend to their respective needs
    • Please carry a plastic bag to take any refuse home with you for disposal
    • We will stop for lunch around 12'ish and generally return along the trail we came in on.
    • If you are car pooling and your boots are muddy after the hike, please bring a plastic bag to wear around our boots for the trip home.
    • Generally we go for coffee, plan to join us.

This section covers etiquette. Be sure to see our
Rules and FAQs for more information. Questions? Send them to hikes@waskahegantrail.ca.
