Waskahegan Trail Association - Difficulty Ratings

It is challenging to quantify the difficulty rating given a variety of ages, physical conditions, weather conditions and other variables.  These ratings are for the Waskahegan Sunday Hikes only; Beyond Waskahegan events generally include a discussion on difficulty.

Caveat:
- Only you know what you are capable of.  Before beginning any physical excercise program, you may wish to consult a physician.
- Consider joining lower difficulty level events initially.  For example, a hike within the City of Edmonton.  This will help you to guage your capacity and interest in the Waskahegan events.

Sunday Hikes - Summer (Hikes) & Winter (Hikes, Ski & Snowshoe)

Winter hikes are typically shorter than summer hikes to compensate for walking on uneven or unpacked snow, the cold, extra clothing that should be carried and additional lunch and fluid requirements

Difficulty (D) # Name Specs Notes
1 Easy Less than 8km distance and negligible elevation gain Speciality and guest hikes (volunteer appreciation, family events)
2 Moderate  8-11km with or without minor elevation change The majority of our hikes are rated as moderate.
3 Challenging 10-14km with or without some hills/elevation changes A hike may be challenging because of distance, terrain (logs on trail), elevation gain or weather conditions
4 Very Challenging 10-20km with or without some hills/elevation changes Distance or known challenges of terrain makes a hike Very Challenging.
